Deaf Dogs
If you have a deaf dog, or are thinking of adopting a deaf dog, the Deaf Dog Education Action Fund (DDEAF) has a great website with information on living with and training deaf dogs.
Their FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page includes information on causes of deafness in dogs, testing your dog for deafness, special health considerations for deaf dogs, and the role of white coat color and unpigmented skin in causing deafness.
Additional pages address myths surrounding deaf dogs (that they’re difficult to train, or bound to become aggressive, etc.), provide extensive information on training deaf dogs, and offer a bit of humor (such as “You know your dog is deaf when… You unintentionally find yourself doing your “good dog” hand signal to your coworkers, spouse, and all dogs and cats that you encounter”).
The Resources area includes information on recommended books, websites, activities, and more. There’s also information on rescue and adoption of deaf dogs, including listings of deaf dogs seeking homes.
