You Can Never Have Too Many Clickers!

As the popularity of clicker training grows, so do your choices as to what type of clicker to use.

I use three different types of clickers, depending on the specific situation.

For most dogs I use the standard “box clicker.” Its sharp sound is distinctive and can cut through most other noises. Of course they come in many colors….

For noise-sensitive dogs, or for clients who have some problems using a box clicker (due to arthritis, for instance), I use the “i-Click” from Karen Pryor Clicker Training. It has a much softer click:

There’s also the “Clicker+,” a battery-operated clicker that can generate different sounds (ping, trill, click, and chirp) in a softer “indoor” volume level or a louder “outdoor” volume level. This can be handy with multi-dog households if you want to distinguish which dog you’re clicking for. You can have 2 different sounds programmed to toggle back and forth, for easy switching, or select any of the 8 possible sounds to use at any given time. I sometimes use the Clicker+ to mark my when my two-legged students “get it right.”

Real Meat Treats for Training

Real Meat Treats by CANZThese treats are great for training, and most dogs find them “high value” (especially the ones with fish in them!). As the name says, it’s real meat with only a few other ingredients (chicory, lecithin, sea salt, mixed tocopherols, garlic). The Real Meat treats are basically meat jerky cut into squares, which are scored so they’re easily further torn into tiny bits for training. My dogs love them! Varieties include Venison, Beef, Fish & Venison, Lamb, Chicken & Venison, and Lamb Liver.

“Pill Pockets” Make Pilling Easy for You and Your Dog (or Cat!)

Pill Pockets

Tired of having to pry your dog’s mouth open, shove a pill towards the back of his throat, close his mouth, and hope he swallows?

These treats are designed as hollow “pockets” — just put a pill in and mold the pocket around it, your dog will think it’s a great treat! Less mess and fuss than using deli meat, or cheese, or even peanut butter….

Blue Buffalo Dog Food with “Life Source Bits”

Buy BLUE Adult Formula for Dogs from PetsMart icon

I’m always looking for pet food I can actually trust to feed my dogs and know they’re getting healthy, nutritional food, but usually I can only find it in specialty dog stores. They eat home-prepared meals for breakfast, but dinner is usually a quick bite of kibble and/or chopped up dog food logs.

So I was happy to find Blue Buffalo’s product lines of food for dogs and cats at my local PetSmart store. (more…)

Buy Lamb Dog Food Rolls from Petco.com

These “dog food rolls” are great! Softer than kibble but a lot denser than canned food, you can cut these rolls up into pea-sized training treats, perfect for clicker training! Dick Van Patten’s “Natural Balance” dog food company is one of the relatively few companies with dog food kibble products that made it onto the Whole Dog Journal’s “Recommended Dog Food” list in the February 2006 issue.

Do be aware that these rolls contain Sodium Nitrite, something you may want to restrict in your dog’s diet if you’re worried about the impact preservatives can have on health.

Brandy just loves her “dental dinos,” and they do a good job keeping her teeth clean. I’ve even caught Nico chewing on one now and then, and he’s not normally a chewer! Brandy’s quite the power-chewer, and these dinos last for months!
